Pahal

She has collected fifty shells

Fifty shells

For

Fifty boys

Who have never seen the sea

but who bathe like kings in muddy water

That ought to be blue

In a too broken swimming pool

that ripples full of children

who long to be clean.

Fifty shells from Zanzibar

For Fifty boys from Zambia.

She sees sea shells

Sure that these shells

Will be gazed upon and wondered at

A small piece of pahal to hide

in a pocket

and touch

from time

to time.

She has collected fifty shells

Fifty shells

that have drifted and are now misplaced

Like fifty boys

Who have seen far too many things

But have never seen the sea.
